Omaha Hi Low: General Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It's a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha hi/low starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. Another round of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players can get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold 'Em, in which the board can make up everyone's hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player's, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same notion in just about every poker game.

A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.

While it seems complex at first, following a few hands you will be agile enough to get the fundamental subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 offers an overwhelming array of wagering choices and because you have numerous players trying for the high hand, as well as a few battling for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha Hi-Lo.
